Wireless Routers in General
There are a lot of basic wireless routers that small businesses use. Netgear, Linksys, Asus, Ubiquiti, D-Link, TP-Link, just to name a few.
I’ve tried a good amount of routers from each company. They are all similar in term of functionality but coverage, performance and reliability is something that is hard to compare in real world situations.
My general experience is that all router configuration interfaces are sluggish in response and most routers lose stability over time so I’ve treated most routers similar up until now. However, I’ve found that the latest Asus WiFi6 routers seem to be more appealing.
Why Asus WiFi6
First of all, the configuration interface speed is much improved. A browser based configuration should be snappy, configuration saving times should be short, too. There could be more improvements but at least the interface is more responsive and hangs less during use compared to existing routers. Asus is going in the right direction and should find ways to make it snappier.
Second, wireless speed is improved with Wifi6. I’ve seldom seen wireless speeds faster, or as fast as, our broadband cable or fios download speeds. The previous b/g/n/ac standards were never impressive. However, with Wifi6, wireless speeds are up to what I would expect now – as fast as what the ISP provides.
Stability and long-term quality I cannot comment on right now but just those 2 improvements were good enough for me to update our main routers.
I haven’t had a chance to try out other Wifi6 routers yet but Asus seems to be hitting to right spots and is my current recommendation for an easy to set up and manage, fast wireless router.
Other Tips
Save Your Router Configurations
It’s easy to take a screenshot of your routers and save it for later access. Save any static IP information, DHCP settings, Wifi SSIDs and passwords, port configurations and others.
Keep a Backup Router
Routers normally fail over time. Keep a back up router. It can be the exact same one or even a different one just configured the same.
